Dog Owner Liability Rules by State

Did you know that you can be held liable if your dog bites someone?  It’s true.  Dog owners are often sued because of their pets’ behavior.  In fact, each state has its own law concerning owner responsibility for dog bites.  The level of liability ranges from “Strict Liability,” in which you are automatically held liable regardless of the circumstances, to a “One Bite Rule,” where owners may get a break for their dog’s first offense.

In the insurance world, the Personal Liability limit on your Home or Renters policy will defend you against claims of bodily injury from dog bites.  Because of this loss exposure, insurance companies ask about the breed of dog in your home and often will exclude coverage based on the breed’s reputation.

What are the Dog Owner Liability laws in your state?  Here’s a handy reference guide to the Dog Bite Liability laws in each state (thanks to the Independent Agents & Brokers of America).

Here at Brock-Norton Insurance Agency we all love our pets. Almost everyone in the office has a pet, and we would do anything to make sure our pets are happy and healthy.  As pet owners, we know that costs for Veterinary visits can be unpredictable.*

There are many reasons for the bill for your pet’s exam to be expensive. Your bill can include charges for:
  • Professional services, which may include the physical exam, medical exam, extended exam, and hospitalization patient exam.
  • Diagnostic services, which may include blood pressure evaluation and more.
  • Diagnostic imaging services, which could range from ultrasounds to radiographs.
  • Lab work services, which may include collecting labs, running, and analyzing samples that test the blood chemistry for leukemia, other types of cancer, heartworms, thyroid, immunity, and much more.
  • Surgical Procedures.
  • Anesthesia for procedures, which could include intubation and monitoring.
  • Hospitalization services, which could possibly include overnight stays, inpatient monitoring and more.

To go into some depth about the average costs of vet visits, most routine physical exams cost around $45 to $55. Most of the times those exams will include routine vaccinations. The average costs of those vaccinations per shot are between $15 and $28. Here are some additional costs for tests and services;
  • Fecal Exams: $25-$45
  • Heartworm Tests: $45-$50
  • Dental Cleaning: $70-$400
  • Allergy Testing: $195-$200 for skin test and $200-$300 for blood test
  • Geriatric Screening: $85-$110

On average, the typical vet visit for dogs will cost between $200-$400 and $90-$200 for cats.  If an illness is discovered, the costs increase.  For example, if your dog’s heartworm test is positive, the treatment could cost between $400 and $1,000. Emergency treatment is another expense that can quickly add up and run up past $1,000.
